Understanding Flat Head Syndrome: What Parents Need to Know and How Gentle Care Helps
Have You Noticed a Flat Spot on Your Baby’s Head?
As you hold your baby or watch them sleep, you might start noticing a flat spot on the back or side of their head. It is very common for parents to feel a wave of worry and wonder: "Is this normal? Will it go away on its own?"
First, please take comfort in knowing that Flat Head Syndrome (Positioning Flat Head) is extremely common in infants. It happens because a baby's skull is wonderfully soft and flexible during the first few months of life.

Common Causes of Flat Head Syndrome
A flat spot often develops simply because babies spend a lot of time lying on their backs—which is, of course, the safest sleeping position! Other common reasons include:
Sleeping Position: Resting their head in the same spot for long periods.
Womb Positioning: Limited space or natural positioning before birth.
Neck Tightness: Slight tension in the neck muscles, making it uncomfortable for them to turn their head both ways.
Please remember: This is not caused by anything you did wrong. You are doing a fantastic job caring for your little one.
How Gentle Baby Osteopathy Can Help
Because your baby’s body and skull are so adaptable right now, gentle care can make a meaningful difference.
At Sapporo Baby Osteopathy, I offer very soft, gentle, and completely pain-free treatments specifically tailored for babies. By addressing subtle tension in your baby’s neck, shoulders, and body, we can help them move their head more freely and comfortably. This natural balance encourages your baby to rest in different positions, supporting a more symmetrical head shape over time.
